The 2023 NRL season was the 116th season of professional rugby league in Australia and the 26th season run by the National Rugby League.The season consisted of 27 competition rounds, the longest in league history, followed by a finals series contested by the top eight teams on the competition table.
In round 21 of the 2023 NRL season, St. George Illawarra and the Wests Tigers contested the 8th edition of the spoon bowl match. St. George Illawarra were in second last place on the table just two points clear of Wests Tigers who were bottom of the ladder. St. George Illawarra would win the match 18-14 in a close contest. The 2023 National Rugby League finals series was a tournament staged to determine the winner of the 2023 Telstra Premiership season. The series was played over four weekends in September and October, culminating in the 2023 NRL Grand Final on 1 October 2023 won by the Penrith Panthers .
The 2023 Brisbane Broncos season was the 36th in the club's rugby league football history. At the start of the final round (27) of the regular season, Brisbane was positioned on top of the NRL ladder. Having qualified for the finals, a significant number of regular players were rested.
However a rival competition was being planned and the only season of the News Limited-owned Super League competition (SL) was held in 1997. The two competitions were reunited as the National Rugby League (NRL) in time for the start of the 1998 season. The NRL was established as a company owned in partnership between the ARL and News Limited.
