Sri Lankan English (SLE) is the English language as it is used in Sri Lanka, a term dating from 1972. [1] Sri Lankan English is principally categorised as the Standard Variety and the Nonstandard Variety, which is called as "Not Pot English". The classification of SLE as a separate dialect of English is controversial.
It is usually taken by students during the final two years of Senior secondary school (Grade 10 & 11 (usually ages 15–16)) or external (non-school) candidate. The exam is usually held in December. The exams are held in three mediums Sinhala, Tamil and English.
At the beginning students were recruited to grade 9 and upwards. Students were selected for art, commerce, and science classes by scholarship examination in grade 8. D. B. Karunathilaka was the school's first principal and R. W. Galahitiyawa was the vice principal. The school had around 22 staff in 1965.
Since its establishment the main medium of education had been English; however, with Sinhala becoming the official language, the medium of education was changed to Sinhala. Since 2002 English has been reintroduced as a medium of education at the college. Students may select one of the two mediums after grade 5 in which to conduct their studies.
1917 : Founded as a "Baptist Missionary English School" by the Baptist Missionary Society of British Ceylon. It was started with only three girls, in the premises of Baptist Church in Ratnapura . 1919 : The classroom was moved to the thatched-roofed spacious hall at the hilltop to accommodate the increasing number of 36 students.
In the beginning, the school was open to 18 students. In 2018, the school had around 2400 students. Also, had a staff of 122 and a non-academic staff of 8. [2] [3] Students currently study the National Education Curriculum of the Education Ministry in both Sinhala and English mediums.
