Tuskegee (/ t ʌ ˈ s k iː ɡ i / tuh-SKEE-ghee [8]) is a city in Macon County, Alabama, United States.General Thomas Simpson Woodward, a Creek War veteran under Andrew Jackson, laid out the city and founded it in 1833.
It was originally called the Tuskegee Home, part of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers system. [ 3 ] The home-hospital, eventually 27 buildings, was developed next to the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute campus (now Tuskegee University ) on 464 acres (188 ha), with 300 acres of the property donated by the institute.
The Tuskegee News is a weekly newspaper based in Tuskegee, Alabama with a circulation of about 3,800. [2] The paper was established in 1865 [3] by A. F. Henderson & Co. [4]. The newspaper is currently owned by Gayle Davis, the widow of former owner and award-winning journalist, [5] Paul Davis.
The district is roughly centered on the Macon County Courthouse and Tuskegee Square. The square was the location of the first three county courthouses. The current courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places on its own, and as a contributing feature to the historic district. It is sited on the northeast side of the square.
The school building program was one of its largest programs. Using the architectural model plans developed by professors at Tuskegee Institute, the Rosenwald Fund spent over $4 million to help build 4,977 schools, 217 teachers' homes, and 163 shop buildings in 883 counties in 15 states, from Maryland to Texas.
