Famagusta, [a] also known by several other names, is a city located in the Gazimağusa District of the de facto and unrecognised state of Northern Cyprus. It is located east of the capital, Nicosia , and possesses the deepest harbour of the island.
Note that even though, prior to the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus, Turkish names existed for some villages/towns, due to political reasons, most of the villages/towns were given a different Turkish name. The largest cities in Cyprus, in order from largest, are Nicosia , Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos, Famagusta and Kyrenia.
It is at the southern end of Famagusta Bay. It is visited by tourists for its natural environment, and is a protected coastal nature park. [citation needed] From the high points on the cliff that rests at the cape one can view out to sea. According to local legend, it is also the home of the Ayia Napa sea monster.

Northern Cyprus has an area of 3,355 square kilometres (1,295 sq mi), which amounts to around a third of the island. 75 kilometres (47 mi) to the north of Northern Cyprus lies Turkey with Syria lying 97 kilometres (60.3 mi) to the east. It lies between latitudes 34° and 36° N, and longitudes 32° and 35° E.
Northern Cyprus is divided into six districts, which are further divided into 12 sub-districts. [1] [2] Each district is governed by a Governor.On 27 December 2016, the Assembly of the Republic unanimously decided that the Lefke sub-district would be separated from the Güzelyurt District, establishing the Lefke District as the sixth district of Northern Cyprus.
The city of Paralimni is located in the extreme southeast of Cyprus island. The city is located 110 kilometers east of the capital Nicosia. The city was traditionally a suburb of Famagusta (until the occupation of the city), just 10 km to the north. Paralimni is located near the Mediterranean coast, about 80 meters above sea level.
