Yadkin Valley is an American Viticultural Area (AVA) expanding across seven counties of northwestern North Carolina encompassing approximately 1,416,600 acres (2,213 sq mi) in the Yadkin River Valley.
Yadkin County is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. The population was 37,214 at the 2020 census. [1] Its county seat is Yadkinville. [2] Yadkin County is included in the Winston-Salem, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Greensboro–Winston-Salem–High Point, NC Combined Statistical Area.
There are also numerous vineyards in the Yadkin Valley area (over 40 in and around Elkin), and the Yadkin Valley Wine Festival is held each May at the Elkin Municipal Park, which is situated along Big Elkin Creek, a tributary of the Yadkin River. Elkin is centrally located in the Yadkin Valley Wine Region (a certified American Viticulture Area).
The appellation is the state's 2nd AVA encompassing 96,000 acres (150 sq mi) with 75 acres (30 ha) of cultivation. The northern 60 percent of the Swan Creek AVA sits within the Yadkin Valley viticultural area, and the remaining 40 percent extends outside of the Yadkin Valley AVA southern boundary.
The area is part of the Yadkin Valley wine region. Four vineyards located within a five-mile radius make up the Swan Creek Wine Trail in the area: Buck Shoals, Raffaldini, Windy Gap and Laurel Gray wines. [8] It is not unusual to spot Amish buggies in the community. A small Amish community settled in the area, beginning in the 1980s.
Yadkin Valley Scenic Byway The byway connects various vineyards and wineries in the area, starting from downtown Elkin and making a loop along US 21 , Swan Creek Road, Old US 421, Rockford Road, Zephyr Road and Springs Road.
Of over 95 North Carolina wineries, [1] Shelton Vineyards is the largest family-owned estate winery in North Carolina. Located in the Yadkin Valley near Mount Airy, the estate is 406-acre (1.64 km 2) acres. The Shelton Vineyards' wines are reflective of the terroir of the Yadkin Valley.
The area is referred to as the Tri-County (Surry, Wilkes, Yadkin) Region and is located in the Yadkin Valley AVA, an American Viticultural Area. Wines made from grapes grown in the Yadkin Valley AVA may use the appellation Yadkin Valley on their labels. At least a dozen wineries are located within 15 miles (24 km) of the town.
