This template counts the number of words that goes into its first parameter. It serves as a basic word count function in areas where word count is important (such as Arbitration Committee statements, etc.)

They come in many forms, most commonly associated with children's school work assignments, tax forms, and accounting or other business environments. The first unnamed parameter, mandatory, is the category name to be counted. A second unnamed parameter, optional, may be used to count several subsets of that category, as described in mw:Help:Magic words#Statistics.
