Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner (born 2 October 1951), known as Sting, is an English musician, activist and actor.He was the frontman, principal songwriter and bassist for new wave band the Police from 1977 until their breakup in 1986.

The band's name came from Hubert Selby Jr.'s novel Last Exit to Brooklyn. The original line-up was drummer Ronnie Pearson (also of the Phoenix Jazzmen), guitarist John Hedley [3] (later replaced by Terry Ellis), Richardson and Sting. The band was a leading act around Newcastle for several years.
