Northbound I-25 between Colorado Springs and Denver. Following the Santa Fe Trail from New Mexico, I-25 enters Colorado while concurrent with US 85 and US 87.It is a typical four-lane Interstate Highway, and its entire route in Colorado lies close to the east side of the Rocky Mountains.
The two sections of the road are joined by a 49-mile (79 km) section composed mostly of unpaved road and a brief stretch of SH 141, neither of which are officially part of SH 90. Thus the official length of the road is 41.9 miles (67.4 km), but driving from one end to the other will require traveling at least 89 miles (143 km).

The entire route was paved by 1946. In 1954, SH 111 was changed, leaving SH 12's terminus without another state highway. [3] In 1970, SH 12 was extended to US 160, and the segment was paved a year later. The route was designated a Colorado Scenic and Historic Byway in 1989. [4]
