Somerville was established as a town in 1842, when it was separated from Charlestown. In 2006, the city was named the best-run city in Massachusetts by The Boston Globe. [3] In 1972, 2009, and 2015, the city received the All-America City Award. [4] [5] It is home to Tufts University, which has its campus along the Somerville and Medford border.
The area is home to Assembly Row, a 45-acre (180,000 m 2) mixed-use, smart growth development that broke ground in April 2012 and opened in 2014. It includes retail outlets, restaurants, residential space, office and research and development space, a 12-screen cinema and a 200-room hotel.

The Mount Vernon Street Historic District is a historic district consisting of the even-numbered houses at 8–24 Mount Vernon Street in Somerville, Massachusetts.The district includes four modest Greek Revival houses built c. 1850, an earlier Federal period house, and a late 19th century Second Empire house, representing a progression of housing styles through the 19th century.
In 2005, The Boston Globe reported the first million dollar condo sale in Davis Square, which marked a major shift for a neighborhood once known as affordable and working-class. [14] It now contains some of the priciest homes in Somerville and is significantly more expensive than the average for eastern Massachusetts.

The Round House is a cylindrical, wood-frame residential building at 36 Atherton Street in the Spring Hill neighbourhood of Somerville, Massachusetts, United States.It was built in 1856 by hardware manufacturer Enoch Robinson, and is considered an offshoot of the octagon house-style popularized by phrenologist Orson Fowler.
