The introduction of Western clothing after the Meiji Restoration was perceived by some as a threat to traditional, wafuku clothing, such as kimono and monpe, so efforts were made to preserve indigenous clothing. Women's hakama differ from men's in a variety of ways, most notably fabric design and method of tying.
