Plain bearing on a 1906 S-Motor locomotive showing the axle, bearing, oil supply and oiling pad A sliding table with four cylindrical bearings (1) A wheelset from a Great Western Railway (GWR) wagon showing a plain, or journal, bearing end [1]
An axlebox, also known as a journal box in North America, is the mechanical subassembly on each end of the axles under a railway wagon, coach or locomotive; it contains bearings and thus transfers the wagon, coach or locomotive weight to the wheels and rails; the bearing design is typically oil-bathed plain bearings on older rolling stock, or roller bearings on newer rolling stock.
The geometry of the way can vary depending on the situation. The most common types are flat, vee, and dovetail ways. Flat ways are used when there is little requirement for the slide to be constrained perpendicular to the axis of movement, or the constraint is being provided by another component or otherwise not needed, such as on the carriage of a lathe.
A linear-motion bearing or linear slide is a bearing designed to provide free motion in one direction. There are many different types of linear motion bearings. Motorized linear slides such as machine slides, X-Y tables , roller tables and some dovetail slides are bearings moved by drive mechanisms.
Fluid bearings are bearings in which the load is supported by a thin layer of rapidly moving pressurized liquid or gas between the bearing surfaces. [1] Since there is no contact between the moving parts, there is no sliding friction, allowing fluid bearings to have lower friction, wear and vibration than many other types of bearings.
A ball bearing. A bearing is a machine element that constrains relative motion to only the desired motion and reduces friction between moving parts. The design of the bearing may, for example, provide for free linear movement of the moving part or for free rotation around a fixed axis; or, it may prevent a motion by controlling the vectors of normal forces that bear on the moving parts.
A foil bearing, also known as a foil-air bearing, is a type of air bearing. A shaft is supported by a compliant, spring-loaded foil journal lining. Once the shaft is spinning fast enough, the working fluid (usually air ) pushes the foil away from the shaft so that no contact occurs.
The discovery and underlying research is usually attributed to Richard Stribeck [1] [2] [3] and Mayo D. Hersey, [4] [5] who studied friction in journal bearings for railway wagon applications during the first half of the 20th century; however, other researchers have arrived at similar conclusions before. The mechanisms along the Stribeck curve ...
