The church is affiliated with the Patriotic Catholic Church of China. It was the seat of the Bishop of Beijing until 1958. [citation needed] After the recent renovation, regarded by many as a classic example of 'wreckovation', the church once again became the Cathedral church of Beijing.

The Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel (Chinese: 圣母圣衣堂), more often colloquially referred to as Xizhimen Church (Chinese: 西直门天主堂), is a Roman Catholic church located on the southern side at No. 130 of Xizhimen Neidajie in Beijing. It is commonly referred to as Xitang (西堂, the West Church) to the locals.
It is located in the Dongcheng District of the city at 74 Wangfujing Street. [1] The construction of the church was finished in 1655 by Jesuit missionaries. Due to renovations and reconstruction, the current structure dates back to 1904. The church is the second oldest in Beijing after the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. [2]
