Sheridan Nurseries has been involved in finding or developing hybrids suitable for the harsh Canadian climate. They acquired seeds of the hardy Korean boxwood in 1922, and first listed it in their catalog in 1939.
In 1913 the Dunington-Grubbs founded Sheridan Nurseries in the hamlet of Sheridan outside Oakville to the west of Toronto, on 100 acres (40 ha) of land of which about 20 acres (8.1 ha) were suitable for ornamental plants. [9] They hired Sven Herman Stensson to run the nursery, whom they found through an advertisement in an English paper. [10]

After realizing the trade potential in towns near rivers, Gurney moved Hesperian Nurseries to Yankton, South Dakota, in 1897. [3] C.W. Gurney's seven sons were very involved in the family seed business, and in 1906, C.W. Gurney and his sons, and one nephew, had the nursery incorporated as Gurney's Seed and Nursery Company. [1]
