In addition to growing from seeds, most agaves produce 'pups' – young plants from runners. Agave vilmoriniana (the octopus agave) produces hundreds of pups on its bloom stalk. Agave leaves store the plant's water and are crucial to its continued existence. The coated leaf surface prevents evaporation. The leaves also have sharp, spiked edges.
Agave vilmoriniana has one of the highest concentrations of the sapogenin smilagenin; in parts of México, the leaves are cut and dried, and the fibers are beaten to make them into a brush with built-in soap. The "octopus agave" is cultivated as an ornamental plant for planting in arid gardens and containers.
Inflorescences are sinuous and narrow, with sigmoid peduncles in the upper third or two-fifths of the stalk. The flowering season is short (July to August) and synchronous, i.e. all plants that flower in a given year develop around the same time. [2] [3] The species is polyploid and apparently sterile, as capsules do not form. [2] [3]
