Jefferson County was organized on July 29, 1797, by proclamation of Governor Arthur St. Clair, six years before Ohio was granted statehood. Its boundaries were originally quite large, including all of northeastern Ohio east of the Cuyahoga River, but it was divided and redrawn several times before assuming its present-day boundaries in 1833, after the formation of neighboring Carroll County.

[1] There are 25 properties and districts listed on the National Register in the county, including two National Historic Landmarks. Another two properties were once listed but have been removed.

Newell is an unincorporated community in Smithfield Township, Jefferson County, Ohio, United States. It is located west of Smithfield and just northwest of Piney Fork at the intersection of Piney Fork Road (County Route 11) and Newell Road (Township Route 134). [2]

Cream City is an unincorporated community located in Saline Township, Jefferson County, Ohio, United States. It is located between Irondale and Hammondsville, along County Road 50, which is also Creek Street within the village. [2]
