After the outbreak of World War II, the Norfolk and Western Railway's (N&W) mechanical engineering team developed a new locomotive—the streamlined class J 4-8-4 Northern—to handle rising mainline passenger traffic over the Blue Ridge Mountains, especially on steep grades in Virginia and West Virginia.
The first run involved using unmodified MGR wagons, these being 356505, 355148 and 356958. The wagons arrived for loading at EMR Saltley hauled by 66152 on 22nd April 2004. Though there were more wagons available on the train, only 3 wagons were loaded. Loading was by shovel loader and levelled and tamped down with a grab magnet.
