The Twentieth Century New Testament (TCNT) is an English translation of the New Testament. Originally published in three parts between 1898 and 1901, it is considered the first translation of the Bible into present-day English. [1] After further revisions based on suggestions from readers, the final version was published in 1904.

Unlike the Purver version the New English Bible was launched with nationwide publicity. In 1764, the Purver version was a novelty, as in the 18th century there was only one translation which held the field, and that was the King James Version. The New English Bible followed on from a number of versions, notably the Revised Standard Version.
In his Preface to the Schools Edition of his 1959 version of the New Testament, Phillips states that he "wrote for the young people who belonged to my youth club, most of them not much above school-leaving age, and I undertook the work simply because I found that the Authorised Version was not intelligible to them".
Noteworthy translation aspects in this verse are the name of Adam's wife, the future tense "will conceive" mixed with the past tense "knew", "said" and "obtained", the lack of quote marks, and translation of the Tetragrammaton. The Divine Name, Jehovah, is featured prominently throughout the Old Testament of this Bible version.
