The Florida Orchestra's history is steeped in orchestral tradition from both sides of Tampa Bay. In the 1930s, Tampa already had a strong orchestra scene with a WPA orchestra, and by the mid-1940s, the Tampa Symphony Orchestra was born, although it would be renamed the Tampa Philharmonic in 1959.
After being issued a construction permit, the station signed on the air in October 1983 as WXCR with a classical music format, advertising itself as "Concert Radio". [2] On April 30, 1985, the founding ownership group, Tampa Bay Concert Radio, sold the station for $1.9 million to Entercom, a Pennsylvania-based company owning several U.S. radio stations.
WQYK signed on the air in May 1958 as WTCX, a 31,000-watt classical music station and the first Tampa Bay FM to introduce stereo sound. It originally broadcast from a tiny studio at the transmitter site at 5750 North Haines Road in St. Petersburg, Florida and was owned by Trans-Chord company.
