Teahupoʻo is known for its surf break and resulting heavy, glassy waves, often reaching 2 to 3 m (7 to 10 ft), and sometimes up to 7 m (23 ft).Because of the regularity and size of its waves, it hosts the annual Billabong Pro Teahupoo surf competition (part of the World Championship Tour (WCT) surfing circuit) and the 2024 Olympic surfing competition.
The surfing event takes place in Teahupo’o, a village on the south-west coast of the island of Tahiti, French Polynesia, southern Pacific Ocean. Teahupo'o is a reef break. The swells that hit the reef mainly break left, but the outer reef also creates right breaks that surfers must be cautious of when paddling out.
The surfing competition was staged in Teahupo'o, Tahiti, in the French overseas collectivity of French Polynesia in the southern Pacific. The decision was made to hold the surfing competition in the French territory instead of continental Europe because of the famous massive waves on the island suitable for the surfing competitions.
