Liberty Bell Park opened on June 7, 1963. [3] Its first meet ran from June 7, 1963 through August 3, 1963 and attracted 510,646 patrons over 50 days of racing. [5] In the fall of 1963, the track was leased to Art Rooney's William Penn Racing Association. [3]

Competition from new racing operations such as Keystone Race Track (later known as Philadelphia Park and then Parx Racing) in Bensalem, Pennsylvania, ultimately led to the demise of the Bowie Race Track which ceased racing operations on July 14, 1985. [8] The track now serves as a training center for Thoroughbred racehorses.
