The word surah was used at the time of Muhammad as a term with the meaning of a portion or a set of verses of the Qur'an. This is evidenced by the appearance of the word surah in multiple locations in the Quran such as verse : "a sûrah which We have revealed and made ˹its rulings˺ obligatory, and revealed in it clear commandments so that you may be mindful."

The following is a list of tafsir works. Tafsir is a body of commentary and explication, aimed at explaining the meanings of the Qur'an , the central religious text of Islam . Tafsir can broadly be categorized by its affiliated Islamic schools and branches and the era it was published, classic or modern.
According to tafsir chronology (asbāb al-nuzūl), it is believed to have been revealed before the migration of the Islamic prophet Muhammed and his followers from Mecca to Medina , as such, it is known as a Meccan surah. Surah Yunus is the first of six surahs which open with the tri-letters alif, lam and ra'. [2]
