UTRGV inherited the academic accreditation of its legacy institutions. [32] The university is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. [33] UTRGV was notified on December 6, 2016 that it was being placed on a 12-month probation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).
UTRGV has since delayed the start of varsity football to the 2025 season, though it plans to play an exhibition schedule in 2024. The school purchased H-E-B Park – later renamed to Robert and Janet Vackar Stadium – in 2024 to be the primary home of the football team in 2025.

On February 14, 2014, The University of Texas System announced Dr. Francisco Fernandez as the founding dean of the UTRGV School of Medicine [3] On July 10, 2014, University of Texas Board of Regents unanimously approved the establishment of a doctor of medicine degree.
The UTRGV Chess Team is coached by Polish grandmaster Bartłomiej Macieja. The Chess Club provides students ranging from beginner to expert a place for them to improve their game. UTRGV Chess competes at the state, national and international levels. They also help promote chess around local communities.
