It was an important and ancient settlement of the Latin and other tribes and arose near the prehistoric sanctuary of Mater Matuta. It has been identified by archaeologists at Le Ferriere, in the present Province of Latina , and it was systematically excavated by the Royal Dutch Institute in Rome in collaboration with Italian authorities.
