The church as it appeared in 1914. In 1886 the territory extending from 34th to 44th Streets, west of 10th Avenue, was separated by the Archdiocese of New York from St. Michael's and Holy Cross parishes and formed into the new parish of St. Raphael, which was incorporated May 4 of that year.
After 60 years, the Croatian congregation moved into the grander St. Raphael's Church at 502 West 41st Street in 1974, forming the merged parishes of Sts. Cyril & Methodius and St. Raphael, [2]: 200 after which the 50th Street building stood empty for several years.
The roots of the Church of St. Cyril date back to the late 19th century when the first Slovenian immigrants arrived in New York City. These early Slovenian settlers chose the East Village for their community due to its proximity to a German-speaking population, as both groups shared a common language owing to their historical ties under Austrian-Hungarian rule.
