Downtown Columbus is the Central Business District of Columbus, Ohio. The area centers on the intersection of Broad and High streets, with the northeast corners being known simple as Broad & High by the surrounding businesses and media.
The first school built in the area which is now part of Columbus was a log cabin school-house built in Franklinton, in 1806. It was not until 1845 that the state of Ohio Legislature entrusted the management of Columbus schools to a Board of Education. Two years later the school board elected Dr. Asa Lord as the district's first superintendent.
A notable landmark, St. John's Catholic Parsonage and School, was built in 1898, with neighborhood construction taking place throughout the thirty-year period from 1892 to 1922. Old Oaks became a historic district in 1986 after a group of neighbors petitioned the city for the designation.
The Columbus Marathon and Race for the Cure 5K events are held annually in downtown Columbus as well. The Columbus area is also home to the high school rugby state championships, which features both a boys and girls competition.
