Bradford (/ ˈ b r æ d f ər d / ⓘ), [6] also known as the City of Bradford, is a metropolitan borough in West Yorkshire, England.It is named after its largest settlement, Bradford, but covers a larger area which includes the towns and villages of Keighley, Shipley, Bingley, Ilkley, Haworth, Silsden, Queensbury, Thornton and Denholme.
City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council is the local authority of the City of Bradford in West Yorkshire, England. Bradford has had an elected council since 1847, which has been reformed on several occasions. Since 1974 it has been a metropolitan district council. It provides the majority of local government services in the city.
A desperate shortage of water in Bradford Dale was a serious limitation on industrial expansion and improvement in urban sanitary conditions. In 1854 Bradford Corporation bought the Bradford Water Company [20] and embarked on a huge engineering programme to bring supplies of soft water from Airedale, Wharfedale and Nidderdale. [21]
It feeds water from Angram and Scar House reservoirs in upper Nidderdale, North Yorkshire 32 mi (51 km) [1] to Bradford in West Yorkshire. The aqueduct supplies 21,000,000 imp gal (95,000 m 3) of water per day to Chellow Heights water treatment works. [2] The aqueduct and the reservoirs it connects to are all maintained by Yorkshire Water. [3]
The Bradford Board of Surveyors commented on the filth and stench in a report made in 1844, and an outbreak of cholera five years later, in which 406 people died, prompted the city council to take action. A wide-ranging sanitation bill was prepared, which included a clause to buy the canal and close it.
The company has its origins in the Yorkshire Water Authority, one of ten regional water authorities created by the Water Act 1973, and privatised under the terms of the Water Act 1989, when Yorkshire Water plc, the parent company of the Yorkshire Water business, was floated on the London Stock Exchange. Thornbury is contiguous with Pudsey – part of the City of Leeds conurbation and borders Laisterdyke, and Fagley in Eccleshill ward.
