A section of the current park. Priory Park is an urban park located in the centre of Warwick, England.Originally the land was the grounds of a 12th-century priory dedicated to St Sepulchre and built in 1124 but this was closed down by King Henry VIII during the dissolution of the Monasteries.
The area which is now the park was once meadow land, also called St. Nicholas Meadow, and was situated on the southern edge of the town. The site was purchased by Warwick Borough Council in the 1930s in response to the towns growth with formal and children's gardens being laid out.
Warwick has ancient origins and an array of historic buildings, notably from the Medieval, Stuart and Georgian eras. It was a major fortified settlement from the early Middle Ages, the most notable relic of this period being Warwick Castle, a major tourist attraction.
It has for many centuries been the centre of the town taking on a number of functions during its history. Although Warwick as a town dates from before the Norman Conquest , one of the earliest recorded events to take place in the square was the mop fair which was chartered in the 14th century by Edward III .
