   The "explicitly ordered us to bring it back alive" could be taken a couple ways. It could be, as you suggest, that Grogu was once in their possession and they're retrieving him. It could also mean that Dr. Pershing was dispatched from somewhere, along with others, to get Grogu and bring him back with them.

   Thrawn say’s, “ Welcome to my team little Grogu.”. The combination of his low cost, high HP, and "free" non-specific ability (by which I mean you dont have to pay other than to exhaust him) seems pretty dang strong to me.
