I had a blood test a few weeks ago and my Ferritin level was at 6. Everything else was normal including my hemoglobin which was a 141 (Range 115-165). I have been taking heme iron and really increased how much iron I am getting in my diet by eating more red meat and vegetables. I don't feel any improvement at all, to be honest I feel worse than ...
A year ago I had a CBC - my HCT, red blood cells were on the low normal range, white blood cells were slightly elevated. TSH was 3.5 and T4 was normal. My dermatologist decided to check the Ferritin levels and I am 17. From reading the posts here, it seems that that is low but she says it's ok. Has anyone been told at this level they are "normal".
Brendaratzloff-- It is interesting reading your symptoms because I was anemic, although my hemoglobin level is now 13--my ferritin was a 5, although that went up to 26, but I have the same symptoms you do, dizziness, loss of balance at times, brain fog, neck pain on the right side of my neck that makes me feel horrible, hmmm..
Turns out I had low Vit D (19) and low Ferritin (7). I went on Vit D supplements and Slow FE and after 6 weeks got my Vit D up to 48 (good level) and Ferritin to only 15. I know it takes a while to get iron levels back up, but what concerns me is the drop in the Iron Saturation Level from 34% to 20%.
I've been on carbonyl iron for about 6 weeks now and my last blood draw showed all the numbers are rising. My Ferritin is at a 14 now. With me, I was extremely fatigued (not necessarily sleepy tired but worn out and my body felt heavy). I was losing a ton of hair for 6+ months, like 500-600 a day.
I want to say I hope you are feeling a little bit better each and every day. It does take a little time for the infusions to help. My numbers were similar to yours (hemo 8.8, ferritin 4) before my infusions I started about a month ago. After my first two infusions my hemo was an 11.2 and my ferritin was a 52.
You are condisered a grade 3 anemia which is serious/severe with a 6.7 Hgb and a 1 ferritin. Your Iron and T Sat % are incredibly low, as well as the small size of your blood cells reflected in your MCV of 62 (62 MCV is severely low). My Hgb was 8.5 and I had a 2 ferritin, I can't imagine the symptoms that you must be having.
I know for me it is SLOW! My hemoglobin went up about 1 point every six weeks. My ferritin went up about 5-6 points every six weeks. I started at a ferritin of 2 and a hemoglobin of 9.5. So, my hemoglobin was within normal range fairly quickly. I would like to get my ferritin up to the 70-100 mark.
MCHC 32.6 (32.0-36.0) Platelet Count 239 (150-450) RDW 12.9 (12.2-14.6) Ferritin level of 21. I'm aware from reading other posts on these boards that my ferritin is low. However I am wondering what type of iron supplementation is best, and when to take it for best absorption? As for the CBC, I'd really appreciate any advice here.
Ferritin is the best way to measure the body's iron store. In iron deficiecy anemia and the prelude to it (where you likely are), the ferritin falls first as a result of iron deficicency. For anemia, a fall in hemoglobin below 12 is the marker, along with an MCV below 80 (microcytic).
