On April 15, 1865, the day after President Lincoln's assassination, a group of Springfield citizens, learning that the body would be returned to Illinois for burial, formed the National Lincoln Monument Association and spearheaded a drive for funds to construct a memorial/tomb.
Lincoln Tomb Oak Ridge Cemetery, Springfield, IL. From a design submitted by sculptor Larken G. Mead, Lincoln’s Tomb was constructed from 1869-1874 at a cost of $180,000. Due to uneven settling of the earth under the tomb, a complete reconstruction of the Tomb was started in 1901 by the local Culver Stone Company.
