This is a list of Antarctic and sub-Antarctic islands. Antarctic islands are, in the strict sense, the islands around mainland Antarctica, situated on the Antarctic Plate, and south of the Antarctic Convergence. According to the terms of the Antarctic Treaty, claims to sovereignty over lands south of 60° S are not asserted. [1]

They lie about 120 kilometres (65 nautical miles) north of the Antarctic Peninsula, [1] and between 430 and 900 km (230 and 485 nmi) southwest of the nearest point of the South Orkney Islands.
Smith Island is 20 miles (32 km) long and 5 miles (8 kilometres) wide, lying 49 miles (79 km) west of Deception Island in the South Shetland Islands of the British Antarctic Territory. It is separated from Snow Island by the 25 miles (40 km)-wide Boyd Strait , and from Low Island by the 17 miles (27 km)-wide Osmar Strait .
