Round nose softpoint 150gr for the .30-30 ( and its velocity range) have been common, available and well tested for over a century. In this velocity range- you shouldnt expect the instant knockdown and exposive internal damage of an ‘06, but it should expand well, do decent damage, and exit on anything but a lengthwise shot.
30-30 ammo is cheaper and familiar to most hunters. There is t much recoil and ammo/components are everywhere. 44 mag factory ammo is more expensive, recoil is about the same and actually much less with 180gr bullets. A guy can pair up his revolver with his lever.
Below are all of my results for the 30-30 Winchester/WCF. Please see the associated card to see the ammo type, velocity, firearm, and penetration information. Please feel free to also add any results you may have had, as this could possibly turn into a library of sorts with multiple contributors to help people pick which ammo to stock up on ...
Now that I am getting into reloading for my 30-30 I have a quick question about case length and trimming them. When I look at the manuals that I have they all say the max trim length is 2.039" When I measured my factory once fired brass they all measure anywhere between 2.031-2.039 and one that is 2.043.
I've had several Marlin rifles over the years in 30-30. They usually average 1.5 to 2" at 100 yards and that is usually considered acceptable since it is getting close to it's maximum range. (talking regular 30-30 ammo here). Newer loads with those ballistic tip boattail bullets may be a tad better in both accuracy and range performance.
I remember seeing that some folks were/ are having a hard time finding 30.30 ammo.....just left Academy in Norman 20 mins. ago and they've probably got ten or so boxes of both 150 gr. and 170 gr. Remington 30.30 on the shelf (might be more in the back ?) at $27.99 + tx per box. They also had...
Scrap the idea of the .30/.30, for you would just piss off a mad bear. Up until 2 years ago my brother, James, spent two to three months each year hunting and fishing the wilderness high country of Montana. If you search about bear maulings in Montana, you can read about a couple of his friends.
Don't know if it's still as hard to find as it was but as of twenty minutes ago Atwoods in Norman has 30.30 Winch. ammo in stock.
Going through MIL’s house, found some old REM-UMC .30-30 shells with hollow points flat nose jacketed bullets. They all had dented primers, so i pulled the bullets thinking they would be 125 grain. Turns out they were 164.5 (average of all four). I’m assuming they were sold as 165 grain. Anyway, just wondering how old they may be.
Up for sale is my 1975 Winchester 94 in .30-30. This rifle is in very good condition! I’ve owned it for about a year and never fired it. Bought it from a buddy of mine who was original owner. I have a couple 20 count boxes of ammo I can throw in if need be. Asking $725; no trades. Text is best 1-405-287-5363
