The area is bisected by U.S. Route 199 which is designated the Smith River Scenic Byway. [1] Passing through the community of Hiouchi, Gasquet and Patrick Creek Lodge on the western side of the summit, the National Forest Scenic Byway is part of the California Freeway and Expressway System [3] and is eligible for the State Scenic Highway System. [4]
Furthermore, the highway north of Lodgepole campground generally closes due to snow conditions, and is not plowed between the Friday after January 1 and the third Friday in March. [4] The Generals Highway begins as a continuation of SR 198, where the state highway legally ends at the southern boundary of Sequoia National Park.
Camping is available at four campgrounds. The Basalt Campground on the south-eastern edge of the lake with 79 developed family campsites. Water faucets are available nearby, and some sites can handle RV's to a length of 40 feet (12 m). San Luis Creek Campground on O'Neill Forebay with 53 sites with water and electric hook-ups.

It is named for the main rivers associated with Lake Seminole: the Chattahoochee and the Flint (which flow into it from Georgia), and the Apalachicola (whose source is the lake itself.)
