Dean Samuel "Diz" Laird (February 7, 1921 – August 10, 2022) was the only U.S. Navy ace to have combat victories in both the Pacific and European theaters of World War II. William Ramsey Laird III (June 2, 1916 – January 7, 1974) was a United States senator from West Virginia. Born in Keswick, California , he was educated in the public schools. He graduated from Greenbrier Military School , King College (in Bristol, Tennessee ) and from West Virginia University in 1944.
Laird held a number of other posts and directorships. He was a member of the Arts Council between 1983 and 1986. [2] He received an Honorary Doctorate from Heriot-Watt University in 1994, [3] was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) under Margaret Thatcher's government and knighted in 1995 at the behest of Tony Blair.
