The Stone Forest or Shilin (Chinese: 石 林; pinyin: Shílín) is a notable set of limestone formations about 500 km 2 located in Shilin Yi Autonomous County, Yunnan Province, People's Republic of China, near Shilin approximately 90 km (56 mi) from the provincial capital Kunming.
The region can be considered the global type-site for three karst landform styles: fenglin (tower karst), fengcong (cone karst), and shilin (stone forest or pinnacle karst).The landscape also retains most of its natural vegetation, which results in seasonal variations and adds to the outstanding aesthetic value of the area.
The Shilin (Stone Forest), a set of remarkable karst formations, is part of the South China Karst, inscribed in 2007 on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Dadieshui Waterfall is the largest waterfall in Yunnan province, located at the southwest of county urban.
On 22 May 2021, 21 professional runners died from hypothermia out of the 172 competing in a government-run 100-kilometre (62 mi) trail running race [note 2] held in the Yellow River Stone Forest in Jingtai County, Gansu, China. When a cold front struck, rain and possibly graupel were carried by gusts reaching level 9 (75–88 km/h [47–55 mph]).
