The Jefferson Street Historic District in Brownsville, Tennessee is a 1.4 acres (0.57 ha) historic district which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016. [ 1 ] It is an area which emerged in the early 1900s as the center for the city’s African-American community.

Brownsville is a city in and the county seat of Haywood County, Tennessee, United States. [6] Its population as of the 2020 census was 9,788. [ 7 ] The city is named after General Jacob Jennings Brown , an American officer of the War of 1812 .
The contributing sites are cemeteries associated with two of the churches, including Christ Church, the burial site of Brownsville namesake Thomas Brown. Located in the district and separately listed are the St. Peter's Church and Bowman's Castle. [2] It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. [1]
