My house was built in 1977 and most of the wiring for outlets and light switches only have a black and a white wire without a ground wire. The wiring up in the attic has a black sheath on it and says south wire 12/2 600v. I'm trying to get power from somewhere in dining room to power a ceiling fan but nothing in there has a ground wire.

  5. 14/2 and 12/2 together???? - DIY Home Improvement Forum

    www.diychatroom.com/threads/14-2-and-12-2-together.96494

I am getting ready to wire up my can lights and I was wondering I have the switch already hot with 12/2 wire up to it. Can I run 14/2 from that point on up to each can? 14/2 is just so much easier to use and feed into the boxes on the can lights? Just wondering as I plan on hooking up the electrical within the next few days.

  8. 12/2 vs. 12/3 - DIY Home Improvement Forum

    www.diychatroom.com/threads/12-2-vs-12-3.39840

Joe, I am not an electrician but from my understanding you can use 12/3 and cap off the red wire at both ends. If in the future you need a 240 volts appliance installed you can use this 12/3 wire and use the red. I guess the short answer is YES and cap off the reds. 12 gauge for 20 amps is correct.

  9. Wire size question, 12/2 or 14/2? - DIY Home Improvement Forum

    www.diychatroom.com/threads/wire-size-question-12-2-or-14...

Wire size question, 12/2 or 14/2? The house was built in 1985 and I think all of the wiring is 12/2. There are 15 amp and 20 amp circuits. There is 12/2 wire on a 15 amp circuit, that's what makes me think the whole house is 12/2. Would there be any issue installing a new bath vent fan where there was not one before with it's own switch, using ...

I have two other outlets that are already wired with 14/2 wire. I would like to put the outlets on the same circuit and wondering if it is okay to mix the 14/2 and 12/2 wires on the same circuit IF I swap out the breaker to a 15 AMP.
