The following is a list of lakes in Chile. It consists of lakes of varying types and origins but the majority of the lakes (especially those in southern Chile ) are glacial in origin. The watershed or catchment area is the geographical area of land that drains into the lake.
The Riñihue lake became famous after an event known as the "Riñihuazo", which threatened to destroy several towns, villages and cities in southern Chile. During the Great Chilean earthquake a landslide near the Tralcan Mount dammed the Riñihue Lake.
General Carrera Lake (Chilean part, officially renamed in 1959) [4] or Lake Buenos Aires (Argentine part) is a deep lake located in Patagonia and shared by Argentina and Chile. Both names are internationally accepted, while the autochthonous name of the lake is Chelenko , which means "stormy waters" in Aonikenk . [ 5 ]
The park was established on 13 May 1959 [7] as Parque Nacional de Turismo Lago Grey (Grey Lake National Tourism Park) and was given its present name in 1970. [6] In 1976, British mountaineer John Garner and two Torres del Paine rangers, Pepe Alarcon and Oscar Guineo pioneered the Circuit trail which circles the Paine massif. [8]

Lake Todos los Santos (Spanish for "All Saints Lake") is a lake located in the Los Lagos Region of southern Chile, 96 km northeast of the regional capital Puerto Montt and 76 km east of Puerto Varas, within the boundaries of the Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park. It has a surface area of 178.5 km² and a maximum depth of 337 m. [9]
Salar de Atacama, located 55 km (34 mi) south of San Pedro de Atacama, is the largest salt flat in Chile. [1] It is surrounded by mountains and lacks drainage outlets. To the east, it is enclosed by the main chain of the Andes , while to the west lies a secondary mountain range called Cordillera de Domeyko .
Lake Ranco (Spanish: Lago Ranco) is situated in the Ranco Province of Los Lagos Region in Chile. Covering an area of 442 km 2, it is the largest lake in the Los Ríos Region and the fourth largest in Chile. It has approximately 25 islands and islets, but only 4 are currently inhabited.
