John Battaglia was the former general manager of the old Latonia Race Track (now Turfway). He also was the general manager of Miles Park (race track) in Louisville, Kentucky. His son, Mike Battaglia , served as the track announcer at Turfway until early 2016 and was also a racing analyst for NBC Sports.
The 1965 winner Swift Ruler won both races. In 1984, the conditions of the event were changed from handicap to stakes allowance and the event was renamed the Rebel Stakes. [2] That same year the distance was increased to one and one-sixteenth miles. [3] In 1990, the event was upgraded to Grade III.
The 1964 winner Face The Facts, even money favorite, won by a stakes record 10 + 1 ⁄ 2 lengths and equaled the track record for the 6 + 1 ⁄ 2 furlongs distance. [7] The winning margin continues to be the stakes record margin to date. In 1967 the event's distance was increased to seven furlongs and was run at this distance until 2012. [4]
The inaugural running of the event was on 21 March 1981 as the Budweiser Tampa Bay Derby Stakes with sponsorship for Budweiser making it the richest stakes race at the track. [2] The event was won by the long shot Paristo, who was part of the field entry of horses at the odds of 35-1 in a time of 1:45 2 ⁄ 5. [2]

Between 1979 and 1985 when the event was held on the dirt track three winners of the race had earlier had won the Apple Blossom Handicap at Oaklawn Park – Miss Baja scored a major upset at Oaklawn in 1979, confirmed her victory by winning by the Bewitch Stakes by 8 + 1 ⁄ 2 lengths, [8] Bold 'n Determined in 1981 and Heatherten in 1984.
The race was inaugurated on 2 October 1948 as the Golden Gate Mile and held on the dirt track. The event was won by Prevaricator who was entered as an entry with the 1948 American Champion Older Dirt Male Horse Shannon II in equal world record time of 1:34 2 ⁄ 5 equaling Equipoise record from 1932.
