He began working for his brother-in-law, Eugene Robert. Albert Wittnauer felt there was a market in America for a lower priced Swiss made watch.

Developed between 1866 and 1937, it consists of ten interconnected brick buildings that are the surviving elements of a major clock-making business that operated here until 1956.

It was owned by the Hamilton Watch Company and was used as their headquarters from its founding in 1892 until 1980. The complex was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
