In 2020, Wellstar Kennestone Regional Medical Center opened a 200+ bed Emergency Department connected by a pedestrian bridge to the main hospital. With its 166 beds, the new 266,000 square foot Emergency Department became the largest emergency department in Georgia and one of the largest in the United States.
Following approval by the University System of Georgia's Board of Regents in April 2023, the system would be renamed Wellstar MCG Health when the merger is completed at a later date. The original Douglas Hospital opened with 15 patient beds. In 1974, construction was completed on the new Douglas General Hospital, increasing the number of beds to 98. The new hospital opened in 1975. In 1976, Douglas Hospital opened its birthing center. It became one of the first hospitals in the nation where mothers and newborns roomed together.
