U.S. Route 93 was not one of the original U.S. highways proposed in the 1925 Bureau of Public Roads plan. [citation needed] However, the revised numbering plan approved by the American Association of State Highway Officials (AASHO) on November 11, 1926 established US 93 from the Canada–US border near Eureka, Montana south through Montana and Idaho to a southern terminus at Wells, Nevada. US-95 continues into Idaho from southeastern Oregon as an undivided two-lane highway for the majority of its length. As it is the state's primary north–south highway, Idaho is in the process of widening US-95 to an Interstate-style divided four-lane highway, from the Oregon state line in the southwest to Eastport at the northern border with Canada at Kingsgate, British Columbia.
US 95 is designated the I.O.N. Highway No. 456 (see Oregon highways and routes); "I.O.N." stands for Idaho–Oregon–Nevada. This section of highway is a primary commercial route between Boise and northern California, connecting to I-80 at Winnemucca, Nevada. US 95 crosses into the Mountain Time Zone approximately 35 miles (56 km) north of Nevada.
Those two routes then run in a northeasterly direction through North Las Vegas until they exit the metro area, where US 93 diverges from I-15 at Apex to head north toward Great Basin National Park. Near there, the highway joins with the combined US Routes U.S. Route 6 / U.S. Route 50 (US 6 / US 50) to run northwest toward Ely .

As the two routes approach Boise, they intersect three state highways: State Highway 16 (SH-16), SH-55 on the Eagle–Boise city line, and SH-44 in Garden City. In Boise, as US-26 and US-20 merge eastward onto I-184 , the Interstate designation ends there but the freeway ends in about 0.75 miles (1.21 km).
