The brown thrasher is the state bird of Georgia. Bird Island (Spanish: Isla Pájaro) is 4.8 kilometres (3 mi) long and 800 metres (875 yd) wide, separated from the western end of South Georgia by Bird Sound. It is part of the British overseas territory of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands , also claimed by Argentina as part of Tierra del Fuego province.

The Georgia Ornithological Society (GOS) was founded by a group of 22 people from the Atlanta Birding Club in December 1936. Unlike many ornithological societies, the GOS’s main focus is researching birds in a more scientific manner. Over time, however, membership among non-professional scientists has increased.
