Zimmerman Library is the historic main library of the University of New Mexico, located near the center of the university campus in Albuquerque, New Mexico.It is one of the largest and most notable buildings designed by New Mexico architect John Gaw Meem [3] and is the centerpiece of the UNM Libraries, the largest library system in New Mexico with almost 4 million print volumes. The Albuquerque Public Library opened on May 1, 1901, replacing the Ladies' Library Association which had operated sporadically since 1883. The new library was located in Perkins Hall, a three-story brick building at the intersection of Central and Edith which had previously housed the first Albuquerque Academy and the University of New Mexico.
The City of Albuquerque acquired the house from the Pyle Estate in 1948 and converted it into its first branch library. Today, the Ernie Pyle Library houses a small collection of adult and children's books, as well as Pyle memorabilia and archives. Although the house is an active branch library, its appearance as a home was carefully preserved.
