A free-piston gas generator is a free-piston engine whose exhaust is used to power a gas turbine. It combines the functions of compressor and combustion chamber in one unit. These machines were quite widely used in the period 1930–1960 but then fell out of favour. [1]
2010: Juniper Engines Inc. (now Westport Light Duty Inc.) became a wholly owned subsidiary of Westport as a result of the acquisition of OMVL SpA in July 2010 and OMVL's 51% share of Juniper. Westport LD now offers natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas engines and fuel systems for the OEM light-duty automotive and industrial market.
Compressed natural gas (CNG) is a fuel gas mainly composed of methane (CH 4), compressed to less than 1% of the volume it occupies at standard atmospheric pressure. It is stored and distributed in hard containers at a pressure of 20–25 megapascals (2,900–3,600 psi; 200–250 bar), usually in cylindrical or spherical shapes.
Many new power plants utilize CCGTs. Stationary CCGTs burn natural gas or synthesis gas from coal. Ships burn fuel oil. Multiple stage turbine or steam cycles can also be used, but CCGT plants have advantages for both electricity generation and marine power. The gas turbine cycle can often start very quickly, which gives immediate power.
The main parts common to all gas turbine engines form the power-producing part (known as the gas generator or core) and are, in the direction of flow: a rotating gas compressor; a combustor; a compressor-driving turbine. Additional components have to be added to the gas generator to suit its application.
Closed-cycle gas turbine schematic C compressor and T turbine assembly w high-temperature heat exchanger ʍ low-temperature heat exchanger ~ mechanical load, e.g. electric generator. A closed-cycle gas turbine is a turbine that uses a gas (e.g. air, nitrogen, helium, argon, [1] [2] etc.) for the working fluid as part of a closed thermodynamic ...
A simple-cycle combustion turbine (SCCT) is a type of gas turbine typically used in the power generation, aviation , and oil and gas industries (for electricity generation and mechanical drives). The simple-cycle combustion turbine follows the Brayton Cycle and differs from a combined cycle operation in that it has only one power cycle (i.e. no ...
Free-piston engine used as a gas generator to drive a turbine. A free-piston engine is a linear, 'crankless' internal combustion engine, in which the piston motion is not controlled by a crankshaft but determined by the interaction of forces from the combustion chamber gases, a rebound device (e.g., a piston in a closed cylinder) and a load device (e.g. a gas compressor or a linear alternator).
