Paratene Temokopuorongo Matchitt (10 August 1933 – 19 July 2021) [1] was a New Zealand sculptor and painter, known for combining traditional Māori art forms with those of modernist art. His work also references events from New Zealand history , particularly the Māori prophetic movements of the nineteenth century and most specifically Te Kooti .

Europeans began producing art in New Zealand as soon as they arrived, with many exploration ships including an artist to record newly discovered places, people, flora and fauna. The first European work of art made in New Zealand was a drawing by Isaac Gilsemans, the artist on Abel Tasman's expedition of 1642. [16] [17]
Co-created pieces include Ka kata te po (with Taepa & Hemi Macgregor, shown at the Te Manawa Art Gallery in 2011 then at the 5th Auckland Triennial) and Tu te manu ora i te Rangi (2008). [ 1 ] Considered a leading contemporary Māori artist, her works draw on her heritage and often comments on the suppression of tribal voices. [ 1 ]
Te Maori (or sometimes Te Māori in modern sources) was a landmark exhibition of Māori art (taonga [Note 1]) that toured the United States from 1984 to 1986, and Aotearoa New Zealand from 1986 to 1987 as Te Maori: Te Hokinga Mai ('the return home').
The publication, Toi Tū Toi Ora: Contemporary Māori Art, was edited by Nigel Borell, designed by Tyrone Ohia and the layout by Katrina Duncan. [5]The publication won multiple awards, including Gold at the Best Design Awards 2022 (Designer's Institute of New Zealand) for 'Editorial and Books' along with Gold in the 'Toitanga' Maori design category.
