A post office in Rankin was in operation from 1894 to 1908. [2] The community was named after John Rankin, the original owner of the town site. [3] A cemetery is the only marker of the past community that remains today, which includes multiple tombstones with the family name Rankin on them.

The state bought the Rankin Farm in 1895 in Rankin County, 12 miles (19 km) from Jackson; it is now the site of the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility. Later the state purchased the Oakley Farm, located in Hinds County , 25 miles (40 km) from Jackson. [ 2 ]
