The Geelong Regional Commission on 6 November 1981 released a plan that would see a massive shopping centre extend from Little Malop Street through to the waterfront. [1]
Market Square was a town square located in the centre of Geelong, Victoria, Australia. Consisting of eight acres (2.9 hectares) of land, the area was reserved by Governor Sir George Gipps as a town square during the initial surveying of Geelong. The area later became a produce market, before being progressively built upon.
The name of the area is officially gazetted as Geelong. [4] The Geelong city centre is the oldest part of Geelong and includes many of the city's historic landmarks such as the Geelong City Hall, St. Mary of the Angels Basilica, the T & G Building, Johnstone Park, Geelong railway station, and the old Geelong Post Office.
Two early hotels – the Victoria Inn (1845–60) and the Waurn Ponds Inn (1856) were located on the Princes Highway serving travellers on the road. The Albert and Victoria vineyards, owned by David Pettavel, began growing grapes in 1848 and the area was better known as Pettavel in the 1860s. [5]
The Sheraton Four Points is a 4½ star hotel with water views developed in the early 2000s. The Royal Geelong Yacht Club was established in 1859, and is located on the shores of the bay. The adjacent Bay City Marina was constructed in the 1980s. Eastern Beach is a popular swimming and recreation area close to the centre of Geelong.
The city of Geelong is closely associated with the wool industry. For many years the city was known as the 'wool centre of the world'. Sheep farming began here in 1835 and numerous Woolstores were opened from the second half of the century onward. Today, Geelong stands as an emerging health, education and advanced manufacturing hub.
