Lurpak is a Danish brand of butter owned by Arla Foods.It is sold in over 75 countries worldwide, [1] and is known for its distinctive silver packaging. [2] Lurpak came into existence in October 1901 after a constellation of several Danish dairy farmers decided to create and register a common brand and mark for butter to increase sales. [3]
In April 2000, MD Foods merged with Swedish Arla and formed Arla Foods A.m.b.A with headquarters in Aarhus, Denmark, [10] and became Arla Foods as it is known today. In 2012 the UK's leading dairy farmer co-operative Milk Link joined Arla Foods Amba, to become one of the largest and most successful European Dairy Co-operatives.
Arla is the largest supplier of fresh milk and cream in the United Kingdom, producing over 2.2 billion litres of milk per year. It produces two premium milk brands: Cravendale filtered milk, which undergoes a filtration process to remove bacteria before pasteurization; and Lactofree milk, from which lactose is removed, making it suitable for most lactose intolerant people.

The company was founded by Thomas Bell as a grocery and tea company in Longhorsley north of Newcastle in 1875. [1] Bell had experimented with rising agents on flour in baking and, from that, produced the world's first self-raising flour. [1] He founded the Bells Royal works which sold the Bell's Royal Flour.
