[2] It was the location of the death of the former premier of Western Australia James Mitchell in 1951, [3] on a train on the Donnybrook–Katanning railway line. [4] Mumballup was once a siding on the Donnybrook–Katanning railway but the railway line ceased operation in 1982.
Balingup is a town in the South West of Western Australia, 241 kilometres (150 mi) south of the state capital, Perth, and 31 kilometres (19 mi) southeast of the town of Donnybrook. The town takes its name from Balingup Pool, located on the Balingup Brook which flows through the town.
It was constructed in 1862 by Richard Jones(1795-1876) and his two sons Richard and William with mud-bricks fired on the site and took two years to construct. The heritage property sits beside the Bibbulmun Track, and located some 12 km (7.5 mi) south of Balingup in the Shire of Donnybrook-Balingup.
The Shire of Boyup Brook is located on the traditional land of the Bibbulmun [2] and/or [a] Kaniyang people [3] of the Noongar nation.. The shire's name is derived from the Aboriginal word Booyup, meaning "Place of Big Smoke", referring to the smoke from the burning of grasstrees, or "Place of Big Stones", in reference to the large granite rocks surrounding the Upper Blackwood area.
